discussing "Handle with Care" *warning, spoilers under cut and comments [13 Aug 2010|01:15pm]

drasticbarbie
I've assigned "Handle With Care" to my book club this month. I've just reread it and am trying to come up with topics for discussion on this. None of the members of my book club are Picoult fans and have never read her books before. I'd like to see how people who are fans react to the issues brought up. Also, this com is pretty quiet lately. So I thought I'd post a discussion.

I was wondering how many of you enjoyed the book or found it frustrating. What got to you the most (because, let's face it, Jodi knows how to get to us)?

And a few more questions:

Cut for spoilersCollapse )

I'm sure you guys know this already, but since I hadn't seen anything on here, I thought I'd post.

Jodi's new book comes out on March 2nd.  It's called House Rules.  I haven't found a summary yet though, so if anyone could post one, that would be great!  I'm gonna be waiting at work when we open for a copy! :)

ETA: I just read the summary on her website *headdesk* I feel stupid for not seeing it earlier, lol :)

- I went to the National Book Festival in DC this year, (few weekends back) and got to meet Jodi Picoult. Which I thought was pretty cool since that's the closest thing to meeting someone famous, that and I love her!! I waited in line for about 1 1/2 hours, she signed two of my books and I got a cellphone picture of her. She was really nice :D
yayyy.

sorry so small.

excited on another picoult masterpiece [03 Sep 2009|12:37am]

I was so happy last weekend because my favorite bookstore launched a sale and it included some of jodi's books! I immediately bought two to add to my collection.
I bought "Handle with Care" since readers have written wonderful comments and reviews about the book. The second book I bought was "The Tenth Circle". Now, I know that the reviews about "The Tenth circle" are not very remarkable but I still bought the book anyway. I figured, at least, I would give myself the chance to read it and find out why most of the people who have read it, don't like it or least like it among Jodi's works.
I have not started reading them yet. I plan to start with "The tenth circle" so that at least, if it's not really good and it turns out to be disappointing, then I'll still have the other book to cheer me up!!!
hehehehe!!!

I'll post my reviews when I'm done and we'll compare notes!
Take Care everyone!

another idea i wouldn't mind her stealin since it's right up her alley [25 Aug 2009|11:18pm]

Jodie loves ripped from headline stories. She loves court and prison, families in emotional turmoil. I'm not sure how much you guys know about the Casey Anthony news story, they talk about it all the time here because it happened close to where I live. But the mother Casey Anthony is suspected as the murderer of her 2 year old daughter, Caylee. The grandparents were also scrutinized as they tried to search for the missing toddler, even the grandfather went so far as to try to commit suicide or something. There's a lot there that would make a really good book and movie. Jodie can also try to tap into the mind of the suspected killer to give us insight into why a mother would do such a thing. She can also do her traditional 'nothing is what it seems' bit where we're led to believe it's the mother, even clues keep being dropped like how the mother waited a month to report the toddler missing or the mother was out partying around and then it turns out being someone else. The news story itself has Jodi Picoult written all over it. I wonder if she's given it much though, and it's not just the Casey Anthony story either. There's a lot of stories of kids who go missing and turn up murdered, but not every one of them gets the media coverage, so it'd be nice to offer insight into how the media decides which story to obsess over when the same kind of crime happens to another kid and barely gets mentioned.

nineteen minutes [25 Aug 2009|07:11pm]

[ mood | contemplative ]

I just finished reading Jodi Picoult's "Nineteen Minutes' and I have to say that, although "My Sister's Keeper" has always been my favorite of all Picoult masterpieces, "Nineteen Minutes" has taken the spot next to it.
I loves it!!!!
There was not a part of the book that I did not like, or enjoyed... I loved how Jodi has weaved into the very core of the parent's feelings especially Lacy's. and I loved how she wrote about Josie's vulnerability.
It struck me how truthful it was when Josie stated to her mother, how each and everyone of us, is somehow like Peter. We all have this Peter inside all of us. It's so true and yet, it is scary to think that we're lucky enough to be able to deal with our frustrations through a different channel and able to have self-control not to succcumb to revenge.
I also like Peter's character. I really see him as a victim despite all the things he has done. I think the ending turned out really sad for Peter and his entire family. But I think that the ending was still wonderful and I could not have thought of any better ending.
Jodi's books are oftentimes sad but I think that "Nineteen Minutes" ended sad but sadness that we can accept... and an ending we can embrace.
I could not help thinking how i would have liked to meet Peter and Josie... But i think again, that there are Peters and Josies surrounding us everyday, and we just might not have known it.

PART ONE: About You
++ Your name: AJ
++ Age: 28
++ Location: Cebu, Philippines
++ Top Three Favorite Bands: Coldplay, Aerosmith, Eels
++ Top Three Favorite Films: 10 things i hate about you, Transformers, Gone in 60 seconds
++ Other Favorite Authors (besides Jodi): James Patterson....

PART TWO: About Jodi
++ How long have you been a fan?: Two years...

++ What was the first of Jodi's novels that you read?: My Sisters Keeper

++ What was the most recent of Jodi's novels that you read?: I'm reading 19 minutes ( My friends did not like this book but i loved it!!!!)

++ Favorite Jodi Picoult novel: so far, i love "My Sister's Keeper" ( I'm praying the movie will do the book justice), and Salem Falls.

++ Least favorite: Plain Truth (Katie was soooo irritating!)

++ Favorite one of Jodi's characters: Anna Fitzgerald, Peter Houghton, Josie Cormier

PART THREE: Random
++ Saddest moment in a Picoult book: How "My sister's Keeper" ended. i really did not expect that ending. But i think that's what made the book great. i had buckets of tears for this book.

++ Happiest moment: hmmm... "Second Glance" ending... It's the happiest, so far...
++ The moment that made you want to scream the most: Katie, in "Plain Truth" when she was bleeding and she was brought to the hospital for dilation and currettage and she still maintains that she's a virgin and that she did not have a baby. i mean, hello!!! you'
re bleeding, girl!!!!

++ Best ending?: So far, "Second glance' had a good ending. jodi's books are usually with a hanging ending but i still love it.

++ Worst ending?: "Vanishing Acts", i think.... Although, i loved Fitz to be with Delia because he was wonderful and he loves her, i'm kinda against the idea of divorce so i would still want Delia to patch things up with her husband. Besides, her husband wasn't so bad... counseling!!!!

++ Let's talk about Jordan MacAffee. What do you think about him?: Typical counsel.... :-)

++ Let's say that The Pact is being made into a feature film, hypothetically. (We know it's already been a Lifetime movie, and it sucked.) Who would you cast as Chris Harte and Emily Gold?: i have "The pact' already but i have not read it yet.... I'm still finishing "19 Minutes".

++ Which Picoult character would you want as your boyfriend?: Who indeed... Hmm.... Fitz, from "Vanishing Acts".

++ And which character would you want as your best friend?: Peter Houghton???

++ Which one of Picoult's characters do you most identify with? Why?: i think it would be Peter Houghton, from 19 minutes. Not in the sense that i used to get picked on during high school but I'm like him in the way that he's misunderstood and yet, he has a very creative mind and does not really give a rat's ass about everyone else.

++ What's one subject that you are dying for Jodi to write about?: Hmmm... tough one! I guess, Jodi has covered the topics that i really enjoy reading and i'm interested in... Family, Law and Medicine (Science). I think of anything right now but when i do, i'll surely post it. :-)

PART ONE: About You
++ Your name: Josh
++ Age: 25
++ Location:  Florida
++ Top Three Favorite Bands: Green Day, DeVotchka, Radiohead
++ Top Three Favorite Films: Little Miss Sunshine, Synecdoche, New York, Dark Knight
++ Other Favorite Authors (besides Jodi): Alice Sebold, Mark Haddon, Tom Perrotta, Stephen King

PART TWO: About Jodi
++ How long have you been a fan?: About two and a half years
++ What was the first of Jodi's novels that you read?: My Sisters Keeper
++ What was the most recent of Jodi's novels that you read?: Currently reading the Pact, but finished Nineteen Minutes before it.
++ Favorite Jodi Picoult novel: so far, tied between MSK and 19 Minutes(though I have read many of her others)
++ Least favorite: Tenth Circle
++ Favorite one of Jodi's characters: Anna Fitzgerald, Peter Houghton(i think that was his last name)
PART THREE: Random
++ Saddest moment in a Picoult book: MSK ending, even if I just read that and the final narration I still get all choked up. I also found what Peter did at the end of 19 Minutes really sad too and that dream or whatever he was having with it was sad and in the same book when he got that letter. It showed not everyone was that bad to Peter, he just thought everyone was against him. I got picked on a lot like Peter but I know not every person in that school was against me.
++ Happiest moment: I smiled big at the part in Handle with Care Read more...Collapse )can I also say that I cheered in 19 minutes when Read more...Collapse )
++ The moment that made you want to scream the most: well the msk end shocked me, but in an angry shock i still can't get over handle with care ending.
++ Best ending?: Well, in most of the books I've read from her they are depressing as hell and usually end with someone dying and usually it's a character I've grown to love in the book so I'm still lookin' for one that won't bum me out too much.
++ Worst ending?: 10th Circle and Handle With Care
++ Let's talk about Jordan MacAffee. What do you think about him?: I like him. He's not as jerky as Campbell Alexander, not really as flat as Maggie in Change of Heart or Marin in Handle with Care.
++ Let's say that The Pact is being made into a feature film, hypothetically. (We know it's already been a Lifetime movie, and it sucked.) Who would you cast as Chris Harte and Emily Gold?: Chis=Paul Dano, Emily=i dunno. i would like it to be someone talented yet unknown, but not so unknown that they just make it another lifetime movie.
++ Which Picoult character would you want as your boyfriend?: hahaha no
++ And which character would you want as your best friend?: Chris Harte, Shay Bourne, Peter Houghton
++ Which one of Picoult's characters do you most identify with? Why?: Peter, I said it earlier why I identified with him. But also Anna in MSK, she was the younger sibling and Jodie tapped into the psyche of a younger sibling and how they feel about ther status in the family unit. Most stories, shows or movies make the younger sibling this annoying, geeky, kid who gets bullied by the older siblings and their peers.
++ What's one subject that you are dying for Jodi to write about?: As a writer myself, I have a fear of talking about these kinds of things and letting it bite my ass in a couple of years when that same story is written by someone else. So I'll plead to the 5th on this on!

i was thinking about the MSK movie and wondering if they will make more of her stuff into films.  i think 19 Minutes would make a great movie or even mini-series.  but it would need to be done right.

Handle with Care would be almost impossible because of Willow's character.  but it would also tear viewers apart.

++ Happiest moment?: Good question.. I honestly don't know.
++ The moment that made you want to scream the most: The ending of Handle With Care.

an idea she can write [23 Jul 2009|09:54pm]

lizardman83
Since Jodi likes to ask her readers what they would do in a situation, how would they react and what side would they take, I think it would be an interesting idea to see her write about a sibling accidentally or purposefully killing another sibling. It could be in the point of view of the one who committed the killing, the parent, and if it turns into a trial like her traditional style there would probably be a point of view of a lawyer in it. But it could still ask the question what would you do and how would you react if you were the parent of a child who ended the life of the other sibling. Would you love that child still, even if it was a murder and not an accident? I think accidental killing might work better.

My Sister's Keeper [03 Jul 2009|02:16pm]

[ mood | contemplative ]

I know the movie has been out for a while, but I myself just went to see it this morning.
I have to say, the movie sure was a big weep fest! Everyone in the theater was crying into tissues... Except for me, who stupidly forgot hers at home! I had to cry into scratchy movie napkins =]
There were a few families and couples in the theater, and even some of the guys were looking a bit weepy... They did that little coughing/clearing the throat thing but we all know what that means!

The movie itself was great. I really enjoyed it, and I felt they went into it with Kate in mind the whole time, which I liked. Sofia was AMAZING! She did such a phenomenal job. I am certain we will be seeing so much more of her in films to come.

The ending is what I am still undecided about.

Possible spoilers! Collapse )

Quick questions, for those that stayed at least a few seconds into the credits...
Why was the pawn shop's guy "Walter Raney" second in the credits?
He's also second on the list when you go on IMDB.
Was this a mistake, or is it someone really famous I don't know about or something? I mean, I only saw him for give or take 5 seconds in the film.

I'm a bit more than halfway through Handle with Care, and the other day I was listening to this song and couldn't help but think of Willow. It seems like a perfect song for her.
Maybe even Amelia, to some extent.

What do you think?
